Creating a Healthy Learning Environment
As the dangers of exposure to secondhand smoke have become more apparent and the realization that creating a smoke-free environment is important to the health and economy of the College community, the Board of Trustees voted to establish a policy that creates a smoke-free campus effective January 1, 2006. The Board of Trustees concluded that the College has an obligation to provide a healthy work and learning environment and that teaching and encouraging healthy life-styles is an important role for this institution.
The Smoke-Free Campus Policy (#8085) can be viewed online.
Creating the smoke-free environment occurred in a three-phase format with the first phase focusing on educating and building awareness of the policy among students, staff and visitors. In concert with the awareness/educational element, the second phase offered cessation programs. The first two phases were carried out from September 1 through December 31.
On January 1, 2006, the third and final phase, compliance of the policy, was implemented. While it is recognized that compliance of policy will take time, there is a strong conviction that the College community, as a whole, prefers a smoke-free environment and that through time, patience and self-enforcing, this policy will be successful and will benefit students, employees and visitors.
