Express Yourself Creatively
Creative writing courses offer students the opportunity to explore
many forms of writing, including journals, poetry, short stories,
essays, and articles. Many of these courses are taught by
faculty who are published writers. Students in these creative
writing courses have gone on to win writing awards and have
also had their work published.
The
English department also offers journalism courses. Students
who enroll in a journalism course will learn the basics of
writing articles and features and may have their work published
in WCC's award-winning student newspaper, The Student Voice.
The WCC student newspaper, The Student Voice, is staffed by students and freelance contributors.
The Voice publishes news, features and opinions as well as
special sections for students' poetry and art. In winter 2000,
The Voice earned 14 awards from the Michigan Community College
Press Association.
In Journal Workshop, students learn classic journal writing techniques to
overcome writing blocks, clarify goals, map personal history, foster personal
growth and expand creative expression. While students’ journals remain
confidential, some of the private, raw material is transformed into polished
pieces suitable for a wider audience, including WCC publications.
