Rob Hagood
graduated from Eastern Michigan University (opens in a new window) with a
bachelor's degree in physics research and a master's degree in physics education. He was born and raised in the Ann Arbor area.
What do you like most about teaching at WCC?
I really enjoy working with the students. I've found that the majority of students here are paying
their own way, so they really work hard. I also like working with the people who work for WCC. Everyone
I have met here is caring about the school and the students; there's none of the political nonsense you
hear about at some other schools.
Do you have any special interest in one area of your field?
In general, I began studying physics to better understand astronomy. But now I just enjoy everything
about both subjects. As I always say, it's good to know everything about everything that's around us.
My wife hates that I have this type of attitude about knowing everything.
What should students expect from one of your classes?
Mostly, the students can expect to learn about the world around them and how to solve problems of
any nature. I always tell my students on the first day that they already know physics, they just
need to learn the words and phrases of physics. Heck, they've lived in this world their whole lives,
and they deal with physics every day.
If you could have dinner with any person in the world, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Ernest Hemingway! The man would have some great stories to tell as we sat back eating and drinking all night.
How would you describe your teaching style?
In general, I would sum myself up as a laid back, easy-going type of person who is
full of opinions. I use the same approach when I teach my classes. I look forward to
what my students have to say about anything. And I look forward to learning from them.
Dwight Hinds
is originally from Tennessee, but he grew up in the New Boston
area, not far from Detroit Metro Airport. He has a bachelor's degree from
Eastern Michigan University, as well as a master's degree from Michigan
State. He has also taken additional courses at the University of Michigan.
What do you like most about teaching?
Getting to know the students!
You teach physics. Is there a certain type of physics you enjoy most?
I've always enjoyed nuclear physics the most. We get a chance to teach that
about one week a semester in some certain courses.
If you could have dinner with any person in the world, living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be former President Dwight D.
Eisenhower. My dad served in Europe during World War II and I was named
after Eisenhower. He has always been my hero. I would ask him about his WW II experiences when he was known as General Ike.
What can you tell us about WCC?
I'd like to say that in 31 years of teaching at WCC, I have never had a
colleague, administrator, or staff member treat me badly. It is truly
wonderful to work in such a friendly environment.
