Residential Planning and Estimating Certificate

Before the building even begins there is the design phase. If you are interested in how houses are designed and want to add that ability to your building skills, or if you are thinking about becoming an architect, this certificate has been designed for you.

This certificate prepares you for positions in residential construction planning and estimating where you are expected to schedule work, research products, develop bills of material or estimates, and prepare proposals.

Here's What You'll Learn:

The program will provide you with the background in and understanding of the basic residential design process and related construction processes. You will gain proficiency in the following skill areas:
  • Blueprint reading

  • Sketching of design concepts

  • Basic architectural design

  • Basic CAD using Autodesk and Architectural Desktop

  • Materials selection

  • Cost estimation

  • Scheduling

Students will also develop visualization skills, communication skills and planning and organizational skills. The development of a strong, positive work ethic, appreciation of the aesthetics, and concern for the safety and well-being of persons and the environment are among the attitudes to be developed by students who participate in this program.

What can I do?

This is a very flexible program for those interested in filling out their construction knowledge or to get a head start with a career in architecture. With this certificate you can plan for residential construction projects in support positions with the architects and construction professionals. Tasks will include scheduling work, researching products, developing bills of material or estimates, and preparing proposals.

Who will I work for?

You will most likely work with architectural and construction firms, general contractors and sub-contractors as well as building supply firms in the construction industry.

How much can I make?

Average income can range from $15/hr at entry level to $30/hr or more.

What is my career path?

With experience and further study you can move into residential design and architecture or become independent contractors and builders.
