Apprenticeship Training: Frequently Asked Questions

As an individual what do I need to do to become an apprentice?
Before you can be an apprentice, you need an employer to sponsor you. Apprenticeships consists of two major components. The classroom training, and 2-5 years of On the Job Training depending upon your classification which is available through your employer/sponsor.

I need to hire a (any manufacturing or maintenance classification). Will you post the job description in your (any technology) classroom?
Most of our students are currently employed but we would be happy to take the job description or you can call our Career Planning and Placement Center directly and give them the information. Their number is 734-677-5155. If you'll fax a copy to us, we'll make certain it gets to the appropriate faculty member.

How much does apprenticeship training cost?
Our training fees are based upon our regular tuition rates.

When can we start apprenticeship training?
Training can begin as soon as you have identified your candidate. Credit for both the On the Job Training hours and the trade-related instruction can be awarded once the paperwork is completed. No time is lost.

How do I set up an apprentice training program?
We would be glad to discuss the procedures for Employee-in-training programming or registered apprentice programs at your convenience. It will take less than an hour to bring you up to speed. Give us a call at 734-477-8508 and let's set up the appointment.

Can companies without a labor union workforce representation set up apprenticeship programs?
Yes, about sixty percent of the employers who send apprentices to WCC are non-union shops. The US DOL recognizes both types of programs. The College has a long, productive history of serving all employers in Southeastern Michigan.

Some of my employees do not have High School Diplomas. Are they eligible to participate in training programs at the College?
Absolutely Yes! Some of our entry-level programming builds on the skills employees routinely develop in the course of doing their jobs and quickly boosts employee confidence. For those employees who desire to complete a GED program, we have excellent relations with that resource.
