In 1996, women helping women was the inspiration for Kathy Wright, a member of the WCC Foundation Board at the time, to establish the Washtenaw Community College Foundation Women's Council. Her intent was to bring together women from the community to address some of the barriers experienced by female students.

The Mission of the Women's Council

To endow scholarships for women based on leadership and academic excellence, to build a mentoring program, and to provide services and resources that support the women of the college.

This lofty mission was acted upon in 1997, when the first Women's Council Luncheon was held to raise funds to create an endowed scholarship. This luncheon continues today, still using the original format, of honoring three outstanding women of the community, "unsung heroes" who have been successful in their fields and/or provide countless hours of volunteer leadership to organizations in the Washtenaw County area, and a notable Keynote speaker.
