A Lunch to Inspire!
Beautiful sunshine and a 79 degree temperature was the opening act for our May 8, 2014, 18th Annual WCC Foundation Women’s Council Luncheon. All the guests, finally getting to wear their “Spring” outfits, were in fine spirits and treated to an amazing lunch and program. Donna Doleman, this year’s Chair of the Women’s Council Speaker welcomed everyone and shared her incites of how WCC helps prepare students for the work place and how her company Ann Arbor Spark recognizes the true value to the student and the community. Chris Euritt was again the phenomenal Mistress of Ceremonies. The Salute to Leadership honorees, Rene Greff, Verna McDaniel, and Wendy Woods delighted the audience with their thoughts on life and heartfelt thanks. While keynote speaker, Maria Thompson shared her life path and inspirations that led her to becoming co-founder of T/J Technologies, Inc., a nationally recognized Michigan company for proprietary alternative energy technologies that was acquired by A123Systems, Inc. in 2006.
But it was the speech by a former student, that really brought to heart what this luncheon is all about and who it helps!
Ana Barge, a former WCC Foundation scholarship recipient, entered WCC as a single mother of three, simultaneously with her son, after overcoming some very difficult times. Her story of growth through WCC to EMU graduation to her employment today as a Cort Furniture account representative, exemplified the empowerment the gift of an education can provide.
The $50,000 this year through the amazing generosity of the sponsors and attendees, along with the half a million dollars raised over the years, has and will continue to help more students like Ana.
