Services and Student Responsibilities

Welcome. This information is prepared to assist you in using the services of LSS.

SERVICES

TUTOR SERVICES

Tutor services are to assist you with understanding the concepts which are taught by your instructor.
  • Tutor services are provided on a walk-in basis.

  • Sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes. Arrangements can be made with the tutor for some additional time if no other student is waiting.

  • Math pre-tests may be reviewed with a tutor. Tutors will not help you to "learn the test." Tutor services are to assist you with understanding the concepts which are taught.

  • Take home tests are to be done by the student only.

  • Confidential information, e.g. disability documentation, is not shared with tutors.
Student Responsibilities
  • Students complete an intake form each semester.

  • Students should come to tutoring sessions prepared with the assignment, syllabus, book and notes. If you are not prepared you may then be referred to a study area to prepare for the session.

  • Students must be courteous to other students using LSS services. Please make alternative arrangements with children and turn off cell phones/beepers while you are at LSS to minimize disturbances to the tutors and students.
If you experience any problem(s) with services, please immediately notify the LSS staff. We cannot correct a problem that we do not know exists. Your cooperation to help us continually improve service(s) is appreciated.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Academic Advising is arranged for students with disabilities by appointment.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Student Responsibilities
  1. All students seeking accommodations must disclose the presence of a disability to LSS and provide written documentation* of the disability. This information will be reviewed and your requested accommodations must be supported by the documentation. Please understand that if the documentation that you provide is not sufficient to assess disability and accommodation need(s), you may be asked to submit additional information before accommodations will be provided.

    * Current medical or other diagnostic documentation is within 3 years. You will be advised if services will be provided and/or if additional information is needed.

  2. Contact LSS for an appointment with a Program Specialist. LA 104 or 734-973-3342

  3. Each semester complete an intake form and set up accommodations by discussing your accommodation needs, goals, assessment results and academic progress with a Program Specialist.
Academic Advising is arranged for students with disabilities by appointment.

Student Responsibilities for Academic Adjustments (Temporary Conditions)
  1. Dates when the condition impacts academic functioning must be included in medical or psychological documentation.

  2. Student must follow the same procedures as requesting accommodations due to a disability (permanent condition).

If the condition is related to pregnancy, students must also register with WCC Ombudsman Services at 734-973-3328 http://www.wccnet.edu/services/ombudsman/

Each semester complete an intake form and set up accommodations by discussing your accommodation needs, goals, assessment results and academic progress with a Program Specialist.

Entry/Assessment (COMPASS) Testing

If you need accommodations to take the assessment in Learning Support Services, prior to taking the test you must:
  • Request accommodations (reader/scribe, alternative testing, etc.) and provide documentation of a disability.

  • Meet with a Program Specialist if you are unsure of needed accommodations.

  • After accommodations are determined, call to schedule a time to take the test. Tests are scheduled according to availability of proctors and space.
Classroom and Test Accommodations (e.g., interpreters, note takers, extended times for tests, equipment)
  • The accommodation request is considered with the essential requirements of the class or program. The essential requirements of a program or class will not be lowered or fundamentally altered in providing accommodations.

    Note: While you may request specific accommodations, colleges may offer alternative accommodations as long as they are effective. That is why it is important to meet with the Program Specialist to discuss your goals and needs in advance.

  • Meet with a Program Specialist to set up accommodations each semester. The student fills out an intake form and schedules a meeting with a Program Specialist to ensure that accommodations get set up. The Program Specialist does a letter confirming accommodations. Students are responsible to notify their instructors of the need for accommodations by giving this letter to each instructor for each class.

    At least two weeks' notice is required to ensure that the service can be arranged. Please remember to make these arrangements in a timely manner. Late requests may result in delay of the accommodation including taking tests in LSS.

  • Immediately notify LSS staff of any changes in using a service, e.g. cancellation (24 hours notice, if possible), withdrawing from a class, room number changes, need to reschedule or cancel a test you have set up in LSS, etc. Sign language services require cancellation of at least a 24 hour notice before class. If notification of absence is not received or there are last minute cancellations, except for sudden illness, student confirmation may be required each time the service is needed.

  • It is recommended that students investigate and use all resources including vocational rehabilitation services (Michigan Rehabilitation Services), Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic for reader services, books on tape, etc.

  • If instructors provide power point presentations, class or lecture notes via Blackboard, the student is expected to inform LSS or the note taker that this is available and utilize this resource. Note takers will supplement this information, if it is available.

  • Immediately notify LSS (973-3342) if a service provider (interpreter, note taker) does not show at a scheduled time.

  • Tests must be scheduled in advance and students are responsible for making arrangements with the instructor for delivery of tests. Cancellation or rescheduling of tests needs to be done in a timely manner. Students requesting test taking accommodations less than 2 weeks prior to using the accommodations can result in the accommodations not being available by a specific date. Extensions for testing must be arranged by the student with the approval of the instructor.

  • If the student requests information to be released, a signed "Release of Information" will be necessary to give information to third parties, e.g. parents, guardian, spouse, and other agencies.


Technology

A variety of resources are available to assist with reading and writing functions, e.g. screen readers, print enlargers, scanning and reading text aloud (Kurzweil), computer software programs for writing and voice input (Dragon Dictate) systems.

Appeals about LSS policies or procedures or questions/concerns not resolved with LSS staff should be discussed informally by means of a meeting with the Director of Learning Support Services. If the complaint cannot be resolved with the Director, the complaint should be filed in accordance with Student Complaint Procedures (Board of Trustees Policy Manual, Section 4095: Student Rights and Responsibilities).
