User Services Statement

The Bailey Library subscribes to a user-centered service philosophy.

On the one hand, we are a teaching academic library educating students in critical information literacy, an intellectual habit essential in navigating independently the ever expanding information universe. On the other hand, we are a service library fulfilling to the best of our ability users’ information and related needs.

In realizing this philosophy, all library staff aims to:
  • Create a user-centered, friendly, welcoming community space of learning.
  • Treat every user with respect, attentiveness and dignity.
  • Address and meet users’ individual needs to the best extent possible.
  • Provide the highest-quality service possible in an efficient, timely manner.

Description of Collections
  • Books and Media
    More than 68,000 print books and over 16,000 Ebooks may be accessed by the online catalog.

    The media collection includes over 3,000 media items in various formats and is accessible through the online catalog. Media formats include videocassettes, DVDs, audiocassettes, music CDs, and CD-ROMs.

  • Periodicals
    The Library has a diversified collection of over 400 print journal titles. Full-text research databases extend access to many more magazines, journals and newspapers.

  • Electronic Collections
    Items as diverse as college catalogs, Michigan newspaper articles, other libraries' online catalogs, additional periodical references, and the news and information provided by Lexis-Nexis are available electronically through the Library.

  • Browsing Collection
    The Browsing books are a collection of titles that have high current and general interest: bestsellers, popular fiction and nonfiction, and recently published and well-reviewed literary fiction and academic nonfiction. You can see a list of recently received Browsing titles by clicking on the list in the upper right hand corner of the library catalog, or stop by the library and browse the shelves located on the back wall near the periodicals. These titles can be borrowed for two weeks with one renewal.

  • Easy Reading Collection
    More than 200 books on adult subjects are available for adults with low reading levels or for international students who do not read English quickly. Use the library catalog and type in "Readers" as the subject to access this collection.
