Eating Disorders and Weight Control

Covering: Eating Disorders and Weight Control

ANRED: Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders
ANRED is a non-profit organization. (The .com in its address is a registration mistake from the past.) ANRED provides definitions and statistics on the better known eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia and on such less well known eating disorders and conditions as body dysmorphic disorder, Prader-Willi syndrome, rumination syndrome, and night-eating syndrome. Discussed are the risks of developing eating disorders and the possible influence of social factors, cultural pressures, media factors, and family factors.

The Body Image & Health Task Force
The goal of this website sponsored by Ohio State University is to explore the issue of body image disturbance and eating disorders. "Body image is how you feel about your body and what you do about those feelings." Much information is provided on low self-esteem and other psychological factors entering into a distorted body image and subsequent eating disorders; there is also an interesting sidebar on plastic surgery addiction. Plentiful links to related websites add value.

Food and Nutrition Information Center: Weight Control and Obesity
Located at the National Agricultural Library, the Food and Nutrition Information Center is a leader in "food and human nutrition information dissemination." Among the topics covered in the weight control section of this website are childhood obesity, treatment and prevention guidelines for obesity, evaluating weight control programs, and the non-diet approach. Many links to other websites are also provided.

Something Fishy Eating Disorder Site
This website is written in a personal, one on one style but has a depth of information on all aspects of eating disorders. In addition to the information on compulsive exercising, compulsive eating, ingestion of diet pills and laxatives, and other eating disorder behaviors that can lead to such serious physical dangers as kidney failure or heart attack, information is provided to assist in coping for both victims and their family and friends. These additional aids include interactive bulletin boards, chatrooms, listserves, and a newsletter published by the Something Fishy website.

WIN: Weight-Control Information Network
"The Weight-Control Information Network provides the general public, health professionals, the media, and Congress with up-to-date, science-based information on weight control, obesity, physical activity, and related nutritional issues." This National Institutes Of Health sponsored website provides information on the distinction between being overweight and being obese and includes a do-it-yourself Body Mass Index scale allowing the searcher to find her/his own body mass index. Other subjects included are eating disorders, body image, and bariatric surgery.
