Cambridge Dictionaries Online
This site provides free online access to a number of dictionaries, including American English, French/English, Spanish/English, and dictionaries of idioms and phrases. There are prompts to buy the dictionaries (and a link to a catalog of English Language Teaching resources), but the search is free and provides results from the different dictionaries.

ESL on-line help desk
This virtual help desk is designed to help ESL students and their instructors. ESL students, besides having the typical adaptations to make to higher education, must deal with language, culture, and education differences. This site provides information, advice, and support to these students and to the faculty who have ESL students in their classes and who act as their advisors.

English as 2nd language (About.com)
Provides ESL web links, including: listening, pronunciation, reading, writing, vocabulary, standards, teaching training and resources, tests and quizzes, as well as English in the workplace.

Interesting Things for ESL Students
This site self-advertises a "fun study site for learners of English as a second language." There is a section of Easy things for Beginners highlighted from the main page. In addition to more traditional sections of information on grammar, pronunciation, etc. there are also links for crossword puzzles, jokes, podcasts, tongue twisters and more. Some exercises also include sound clips, which can be very useful for learning pronunciation.

OWL (Online Writing Lab) at Purdue
The Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University provides free resources and instructional material through this site. In addition to a great deal of other material (grammar, the writing process, etc.), there is an extensive section on English as a Second Language.

Online Directory of ESL Resources
The Online Directory of ESL Resources "provides an online reference for the most useful ESL resources primarily for teachers and students." The site is search-based (no browsing available), and users can search by Organization, City, State, Description or a combination.

Online English grammar
Users can search by subject list, contents, punctuation, writing tips, or English tests. Offers information on adjectives, adverbs, nouns, possessives, determiners, pronouns and verbs.

TOEFL
ETS's official site for TOEFL. It includes topics such as: Computer-based TOEFL -- Paper-based TOEFL -- TOEFL insitutional testing program -- Test of spoken English -- Information bulletins -- Tutorials and practice questions.

UsingEnglish.com
UsingEnglish.com "provides a large collection of English as a Second Language (ESL) tools & resources for students, teachers, learners and academics." Sections of the site include English Language Reference (verbs, idioms, etc.), ESL sample tests, ESL articles, ESL Teacher Resources, Discussion Forums and a number of other tools, including grammar checker.
