American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages : ACTFL
Presents the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), based in Yonkers, New York. Posts contact information via mailing address, e-mail, and telephone and fax numbers. Contains an online membership form. ACTFL is dedicated to promoting and fostering the study of languages and cultures as an integral component of American education and society. Discusses membership benefits, special interest groups, meetings, and national standards in foreign language education.

Arabic Language (About.com)
On this site, you can find resources for learning Arabic, online dictionaries, and websites about Islam written in Arabic.

Background notes
Provides access to online Background Notes generated by the U.S. Department of State. Notes that Background Notes provide information on geographic entities and international organizations, and are updated periodically. Includes Notes on areas such as Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, Europe and Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as international organizations such as the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the European Community.

Cambridge Dictionaries Online
This site provides free online access to a number of dictionaries, including American English, French/English, Spanish/English, and dictionaries of idioms and phrases. There are prompts to buy the dictionaries (and a link to a catalog of English Language Teaching resources), but the search is free and provides results from the different dictionaries.

French Connection
A rich resource providing multitudes of links on topics such as the French language, French history, French government, French culture, etc. This resource is provided through the Library system at Howard University. Users have to watch the links on the left side of the page: they go to other parts of the library site and will navigate the user away from the French Connection. The page has information in both French and English, but the navigation is English-based.

French Language (About.com)
About.com provides a wealth of resources for students of the French language. The main page includes a proficiency test, a blog, learning tips and a number of links to "in depth" resources. The "Start Learning" tab is an excellent resource for those wishing to learn and practice French. It includes an overview, ten basic lessons (alphabet, grammar, pronunciation, etc.), and sections of tools, advice on learning and assessment resources.

German Language (About.com)
About.com provides free online German course for beginners (three lessons). It covers German greetings and courtesies, the German alphabet and learning tips. The site also provides sections on grammar, vocabulary and culture, a German language blog, a word of the day for vocabulary building, audio resources an much more.

Spanish Language (About.com)
About.com provides a rich learning tool for the Spanish language. Resources on the main page include a Spanish language blog, information on learning a language and much more. The "Start Learning" tab includes a free 5-unit introductory course with links to additional resources. The site also includes a "Continue Learning" tab with lots of additional lessons for those who wish to go further. There is also a tab with additional material on Spanish culture.

The world factbook
Compiled by the Central Intelligence Agency, the World Factbook contains profiles of different countries in the world. In general, information available as of 29 June 2006 was used in the preparation of this edition.

yourDictionary.com
A comprehensive index of on-line dictionaries with over 1,000 dictionaries in more than 200 different languages. This conveniently organized index includes glossaries of specialized terminology and other vocabulary aids. It includes an index of on-line grammars.
