The Brookings Institution - U.S. Poverty
Brookings Institution has been providing research and policy analysis on many public policy issues for over 90 years. In addition to its research and commentary on poverty, other relevant topics include welfare, children & families, and the working poor.

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) - Poverty and Income
This nonpartisan center was founded in 1981 to analyze proposed tax and budget policies of the federal and state governments and how they affect low-income Americans. Historical tables show poverty and income analysis by year.

Economic Policy Institute
A liberal think tank on socio-economic issues.

Institute for Research on Poverty
The Institute for Research on Poverty (IRP) is a “center for research into the causes of poverty and social inequality in the United States.” It is one of three area Poverty Research Centers founded by the U.S. Dept. of Human Services and focuses on poverty in the Midwest. The site includes a FAQ on poverty, papers, reports, events information and is searchable.

National Poverty Center
"The National Poverty Center promotes high-quality research on the causes and consequences of poverty, developing and analyzing policies to alleviate poverty, and the training of the next generation of poverty researchers." It was established in 2002 as part of the University of Michigan’s Ford School of Public Policy. The major topics of research include: health and poverty, welfare reform, marriage and family, and race and ethnicity. The web site supplies facts on poverty in the U.S., a variety of publications, and links to additional global websites on poverty.

The Office of Family Assistance
This website offers information about TANF, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, which was created in 1997. It is under the administration of the U. S. Dept. of Health and Human Services and replaces former federal welfare programs. Information on work requirements, specifics of state programs, and important contact numbers are provided. There are also documents on the Healthy Marriage Initiative, Charitable Choice, and links to welfare reform/social services websites.

U.S. Census Bureau - Poverty
An outstanding source on all aspects of poverty, including overviews, definitions, state estimates and historical tables.

U.S. Government Accountability Office - Report on Poverty in America (2007) (PDF)
This study outlines the economic research about the relationship between poverty and adverse social conditions, such as poor health outcomes, crime, and labor force attachment, and what links economic research has found between poverty and economic growth.

U.S. Social Security Administration - History of Poverty Thresholds
An historical bulletin by Gordon M. Fisher (1992) that explains how the original measurements of poverty were developed.

United States Department of Health and Human Services, Poverty Guidelines, Research and Measurement
The Department of Health and Human Services provides the annual poverty guidelines, FAQ's on poverty measurements and links to poverty research centers.
