Jim Cogswell: Meanwhile

Transitions/Translations: Innovations in Basketry
January 10 - March 14, 2005

Cultural forces throughout the 20th Century have created a tension between traditional, functional values and an urge for content-based artistic expression that has produced an explosion of innovative works that continually push the boundaries of materials and ideas. Throughout the academic year, Gallery One will be exploring issues surrounding the movement that has transformed traditional American Crafts from functional into content-based creations. Through exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations, the gallery will examine some of the questions raised by this major sift in emphasis. The seven artists in Innovations in Basketry, the second exhibition in this series, have created works from the monumental to the minute. Their widely varied sources have led them to the exploration of unique artistic expressions that are related through their interest in the processes and materials of basketry.

Artists in this exhibit include:
Carol Eckert, Tempe, AZ
John Garrett, Albuquerque, NM
Lissa Hunter, Portland, ME
Ferne Jacobs, Los Angeles, CA
John McQueen, Saratoga Springs, NY
Mary Merkel-Hess, Iowa City, IA
Karyl Sisson, Beverly Hills, CA

A short artist statement and image from each artist can be seen in the Artist Statement PDF file.
