A Journey to China
November 12 - January 18, 2002

Gallery One is proud to present an exhibition exploring visual representations of Chinese culture that were collected by Elisabeth Thoburn, Instructor and Chair of Washtenaw Community College's Humanities Department. Ms. Thoburn was one of 14 educators from around the country who traveled to China this summer on a Fulbright-Hays Travel Grant. The purpose of the grant, awarded to The University of Michigan, was to provide educators with first hand experience of Chinese culture in order to incorporate the teaching of this culture into the local curriculum. While there, the group was able to establish contacts with local schools and to gain valuable information about the educational system of China.

Many of the objects on display are reproductions of ancient artifacts. Others represent objects from daily life and contemporary arts and crafts. These objects serve as visual and physical touchstones in exploring and understanding China's rich, tradition-based history. By highlighting significant forms, ideas, and materials, the objects give clues about their context, thus offering us entrance into Chinese culture.
