Colorful and exciting, Cogswell's work originates in the figure; by the time the piece is completed the figure has merged into an abstract design.

Crossing the Divide: African-American Art at the Turn of the Century
April 22 - June 14 2002

This show is the third in a three-part series exploring the process by which African traditions and influences came to play a part in contemporary American art.

This third installment pairs the work of two contemporary African-American artists: Marianetta Porter and Beverly Buchanan. The work of these artists, both of whom are Southern Natives, explores issues of race, memory, and history through the use of mixed media, and displays evidence of a strong African-American artistic tradition that draws on both Western and African influences.
