Grade Posting Information

There are several ways to post student information and still protect student privacy as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) since FERPA prohibits the posting of grades by any portion of either the student's WCC ID number or any portion of the social security number.

One Way to Post Grades
Many faculty members suggested that the grading portion of Blackboard saved them a lot of trouble over the semester. Here is what some of them said:
"Blackboard offers ideal options for postings of grades. It's instant. It's confidential. It's safe. Even instructors who do not use all the other options of Blackboard could learn to use the gradebook in less than 15 minutes. The learning process for students should be even shorter."

"I simply create a class website on Blackboard and post all the info there. Each student can access their own grades (as they each have a unique password) 24 hours per day."

"It is always accessible, they can't forget their random number, it shows where they stand in relation to a class average on each assessment, and the instructor has the "grade figuring" done automatically. Just be sure to export the gradebook to your own hard drive, as a back-up copy."

There are sessions scheduled on how to use the grading portion of Blackboard. The sessions will explain how to add students into your course, add an item to be graded into the gradebook, how to input grades, remove an item, change the item order, and make other modifications. There will be a question and answer period, and time for personal attention. If interested, please contact Distance Learning at 734-477-8713 so that your Blackboard account will be ready for you.

Another Way to Post Grades
In order to post grades publicly, students should be assigned a random number and their grades can then be posted by that number. There is a worksheet with random numbers already available for your class. Go to the WCC home page and log into My WCC under the staff menu. After logging into My WCC, choose Oraweb from the drop down menu.

After you click on Faculty Reports you will find the GRADE ID REPORT near the bottom of the list. After you pull up the report, just enter your CRN and the list will be generated with the students assigned a random number. Cut in half and give the number to the student whose name is listed so that they know their posting number. Use the half without names on it to publicly post grades.

You can run the list again at a later date in the semester and the random numbers already assigned to your students won't change. If students add your class, they will be listed the next time you run the list. Students are not listed alphabetically in order to protect their privacy.
