Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) evaluates advanced-level English language competence of adult non-native speakers of English such as:
- Students applying to United States, Canadian, British, and other educational institutions where the language of instruction is English.
- Professionals who need English for work or training purposes.
- Anyone interested in obtaining a general assessment of their English language proficiency for educational or employment opportunities.
The MELAB is a secure test battery and is administered only by the ELI-UM and ELI-UM authorized official examiners in the United States and Canada. Many educational institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries accept the MELAB as an alternative to the TOEFL. MELAB tests are no longer taken at the University of Michigan. They are given at Washtenaw Community College on the second Saturday of the month.
Registration
To register for the MELAB test, download the MELAB Official Identification Form (PDF) and mail it to Washtenaw Community College. Your completed MELAB Official Identification Form, your passport-size photo, and the test fee (money order only) of U.S. $80.00 (without the speaking test) or U.S. $120.00 (with the speaking test) must arrive at WCC by the deadline.
The completed registration form, photo, and money order can be turned in at SC 300 or SC 332.
Registration deadline is 10 business days prior to testing date.

Tests are given at 7:45am in in GM 201 on the following dates:
- November 14, 2009
- December 12, 2009
- January 9, 2010 - Last date for registration is December 15, 2009
- February 13, 2010
- March 13, 2010
- April 10, 2010
- May 8, 2010
- June 12, 2010
- July 10, 2010
