WCC Financial Aid Regulations
- In addition to other federal aid, students may also be eligible for a federal student loan.
An additional application is required. Contact the Financial Aid Office for information.
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours of a financial aid eligible program to receive loan funds.
- Students who are awarded College Work-Study funds may earn up to the awarded amount.
After this amount is earned, the student will no longer be allowed to work. A student employee
may not exceed 20 hours of work per week. Students who are awarded work-study need to contact
the Employment Services Office at SC 287 to find a work-study job on campus.
- Students who receive Federal Title IV Financial Aid and do not complete or attend class
for at least 60% of the semester will be required to repay a portion of their aid to the
Federal Government based on the last date of any academically related activity.
- Federal Title IV Financial Aid consists of Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational
Opportunity Grants (SEOG), Academic Competitiveness Grant, The Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) Unsubsidized Loans,
FFELP Subsidized Loans, Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students, and Federal Work-Study.
- The amount of Pell Grant awarded is based on 12 credit hours. Adjustments will be made according to the number of registered credit hours.
- Students are required to report any additional income or assistance received
during the year to the Financial Aid Office.
- Students are responsible for paying all charges that are not covered by financial aid.
- Federal Financial Aid funds are disbursed directly to a student's account in accordance with Federal regulations.
- Students who have attempted more than 30 credits of remedial course work are no longer
eligible to receive Federal Title IV funds.
- The Satisfactory Academic Progress Standard of the WCC Financial Aid Office requires that
all students receiving aid maintain a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.0 or
greater and complete at least 75 percent of their semester credits.
- Federal Regulations
Spring/Summer Financial Aid Awards for 2010
- Pell Grant eligibility for the Spring/Summer 2010 (201005) semester will be determined using 2009-2010 FAFSA data. Students may have additional eligibility compared to previous years based on new legislation. The award letter will reflect this new amount, if eligible.
If the student is receiving their second Pell award for the aid year, he or she must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. The student should contact the Financial Aid Office for enrollment requirements.
- FSEOG funds will be awarded beginning with students who have a zero EFC (Expected Family Contribution). SEOG will be awarded once the student registers for the Spring/Summer semester and until funds are exhausted.
- Due to limited FWS (Federal Work-Study) funds, only students who were working for the Winter 2010 semester will be awarded FWS for the spring/summer. Students cannot work past June 30, 2010.
- Loan process: If Spring/Summer will be the student’s first loan for the 2009-2010 academic year, the student will go online through their MyWCC account to complete the online loan request form. If a student has borrowed a loan in either the Fall 2009 or Winter 2010 semester and completed an online loan request form, the student must fill out a paper loan request form for the Spring/Summer 2010 semester.
Loan eligibility will be determined based on the student’s enrollment at the time of processing by the Financial Aid Office. Students should register for all classes prior to requesting a loan. If a student increases his or her enrollment after the loan has been processed, the student may ask for an increase via a paper form after the end of the drop period. For the Spring/Summer 2010 semester, that date is May 26, 2010.
Maintaining Financial Aid Eligibility
Students who receive Title IV Federal financial aid and do not complete or attend class for at
least 60 percent of the semester will be required to return a prorated portion of their aid to
the Federal government based on the last date of any academically-related activity. Title IV
financial aid consists of parent loans for undergraduate students, subsidized and unsubsidized
student loans, Pell Grants, Academic Competitiveness Grants, Supplemental Education Opportunity
Grants, and Federal Work-Study.
- Satisfactory academic progress
Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Enrollment Status
Many financial aid awards are based on the number of credit hours on the student's schedule:
6 credit hours are half-time status, 9 credit hours are three quarters time status, and 12
credit hours are full-time status. Financial Aid will not count courses taken in audit status
toward your total credit load for the semester.
- Dropping or Withdrawing
Changes in the number of credit hours on your schedule can affect your financial aid award.
Talk it over with the Financial Aid Office first to find out how your award might be affected.
If you withdraw, you may be put on Financial Aid Probation, be terminated from Financial Aid,
or have to repay some or all of your aid.
Return of Title IV Funds
The federal government mandates that if you withdraw, officially or unofficially, from all
of your classes you may only keep the financial aid you have "earned" up to the time of withdrawal.
Students who receive Title IV Federal financial aid and do not complete or attend class for at
least 60 percent of the semester will be required to return a prorated portion of their aid to
the Federal government based on the last date of any academically-related activity.
When you withdraw from all of your classes, WCC must determine the actual amount of federal
aid that you earned while you attended your classes. To determine the amount of aid you have
earned up to the time of withdrawal, WCC will divide the number of calendar days you attended
classes by the total number of calendar days in your program of study (less any scheduled breaks
of 5 days or more). The resulting percentage is then multiplied by the total federal funds that
were disbursed to you for the semester. This calculation determines the amount of aid you
earned which you may keep (for example, if you attended 25% of the term, you have earned
25% of the aid disbursed).
If Title IV funds were disbursed in excess of the earned amount then those funds must be
returned to the federal government. WCC will notify you by letter if you are required to
repay any of your federal funds. You will be responsible to repay any funds that are
determined to be unearned (total aid disbursed less the earned amount). This does not apply
to you if you have withdrawn from some of your classes but remained enrolled in others,
or have successfully completed at least one class.
Federal funds that may be affected by a complete withdrawal are:
- Federal Unsubsidized Student Loan
- Federal Subsidized Student Loan
- Federal PLUS (Parent) Loan
- Federal Pell Grant
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
- Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant
Return of Institutional Funds
Students should be aware that changes to your class schedule during the 100% refund period may
result in the student owing back financial aid funds. Also, any changes made after the 100%
refund period may result in financial aid termination. Once you are terminated from financial
aid you are no longer eligible to receive any type of aid, (excluding scholarships). You may
continue to attend WCC using your own funds for payment. Please see the Satisfactory Academic
Progress Standard for more information.
