Meet the Board: Mr. David E. Rutledge
David Rutledge is the president of Alpha Environmental Services, Inc. located in Detroit, Michigan.
He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from
Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, and
has done graduate work at both the Harvard Law School and the
University of Michigan Law School.
He has served on the part-time faculty of Wayne State University in their college of Lifelong Learning. David is a military veteran having served in the United States Airforce as a Personnel and Administrative Officer.
David's work history includes both public and private sector experiences. He was first elected in 1996 and reelected in 2002 (expiring December 31, 2008) on the Board of Trustees at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and served as Board Chair during 2001-02.
He has also held elective office as a Township Supervisor serving two consecutive four-year terms followed by serving the Michigan House of Representatives as the Deputy Director of the Legislative Research Staff.
Community service makes up an important part of the fabric of David's life. He has served on state commissions appointed by two different governors from different political parties and is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Ann Arbor Community Foundation. He has served as a gubernatorial appointee to the State Boundary commission which rules on annexation cases. He has served on the local Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and as a member of the Michigan Great Lakes Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He is past chair of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) and is currently serving a six-year term as a County Road Commissioner appointed by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners. Because of his leadership and service to his community and the State of Michigan over a long period, David was honored by the Ann Arbor News as its Citizen of the Year for 2000.
David's publications includes articles related to annexation, "The Annexation Dilemma" and "Inside the Boundary Commission," both published by the Michigan Township News Magazine at Volume XXXXII, No. 3, April 2000.
David is married to Geraldine Simmons Rutledge who is a retired elementary school teacher. They have two children, Marcus and Felicia, a graduate of WCC.
